Fandango and Battle of Rio San Gabriel in Montebello

FREE: On the first Saturday of January, the Montebello Historical Society invites you to their Commemoration of the Battle of Rio San Gabriel which took place in early January 1847 (prior to the Capitulation at Campo de Cahuenga); there will be a reenactment of this local encounter fought in California during the Mexican American War, also, live fandango music and dancing which recreates an important part of Early California life, plus presentations by historic figures.
SITE: Juan Matias Sanchez Adobe, 946 N. Adobe Avenue,Montebello, CA 90640. Plentiful street parking.
* VINTAGE DANCING FOR ALL AGES at 11:15-11:45am; and 1-2pm. Enjoy authentic Early California & Yankee period music, and audience participation with easy old-fashioned steps suitable for all ages. The musicians Corazon del Fandango (Bob Altman & friends) are playing with "Tecolera" Mlle. Irene Ujda calling.
* BATTLE OF SAN RIO GABRIEL at 12pm noon & 3pm: Come see uniformed American & Californio reenactors portray the thrilling military events leading up to California statehood. Experience the smell of the black powder from the musket firing demonstrations.
* Visit rare living history exhibits staffed with knowledgeable enthusiasts. Have children learn quaint arts & crafts of a bygone time.

* The event is free! Costumes admired but not required. There will be hot food and beverages available for purchase, or bring your own picnic. RAIN DOES NOT CANCEL.
