Fandango at Rio San Gabriel in Montebello

On the first Saturday of January, the Montebello Historical Society invites you to their Commemoration of the Battle of Rio San Gabriel which took place in early January 1847 (prior to the Capitulation at Campo de Cahuenga); there will be a reenactment of this local battle fought in California during the Mexican American War, and also live fandango music and dancing which was such an important part of Early California life.

SITE: Juan Matias Sanchez Adobe, 946 N. Adobe Avenue,Montebello, CA 90640. Plentiful street parking.

* VINTAGE DANCING FOR ALL AGES at 12noon, 1:30pm and 2:30PM: Enjoy live authentic Early California period music & 19th c. fandango dancing, try out easy old-fashioned steps during the audience participation sets for all ages! Corazon del Fandango (Bob Altman & friends playing) and Tecolera Mlle. Irene.
* BATTLE OF RIO SAN GABRIEL at 1pm & 3pm: Come see uniformed American & Californio reenactors portray the thrilling military events leading up to California statehood! Experience the smell of the black powder from the musket firing demonstrations!

* Visit rare living history exhibits staffed with knowledgeable enthusiasts! Have children learn quaint arts & crafts of a bygone time!

* The event is free! Costumes admired but not required. Plus there will also be hot food and beverages available for purchase. RAIN DOES NOT CANCEL.
