Culinary Historians of Southern California lecture
Drinking with Shakespeare and Jane Austen – English beverages from 1600 to 1800. Richard Foss will speak on punches, syllabubs, gin, ale, and the other traditional drinks of England, with a focus on Jane Austen’s Regency era and how writers used what people drank to show who they were.

Bruce Moran, professor of history at the University of Nevada, Reno, and the Dibner Distinguished Fellow at The Huntington, will discuss alchemy—a subject that he says is often greatly misunderstood and one that figures significantly in early modern science. Moran is the author of Distilling Knowledge: Alchemy, Chemistry and the Scientific Revolution.
