The Art Theatre Showcases Shanghai Girls’ Author, Lisa See
On September 27, 2009, Sunday, at 11:00 a.m. author of On Gold Mountain, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, & Peony in Love will be providing a lecture on early California history and sharing her new book, Shanghai Girls, with the audience as they enjoy brunch. Lisa See was born in Paris, but grew up in Los Angeles and spent a great deal of time in Chinatown. The family antique business at one time included five stores from Sacramento to Pasadena and Long Beach on the Pike under her great-grandfather, Fong See. She has always been interested in stories that have been forgotten, lost or purposely covered up. Tracing her family heritage has led her to find some of these stories. Her book, Flower Net, was a national best seller, a NY Times Notable Book, and on the LA Times Best Books List for 1997.
Her new book, Shanghai Girls, starts in 1937 when Shanghai was the Paris of Asia. Two sisters, Pearl Chin and May, whose father own a successful rickshaw business, are having a wonderful time in this city of millionaires, gangsters, gamblers, artists, warlords, patriots, and revolutionists. When the Japanese bombs destroy their city, they take off on a “journey of a lifetime” that moves them through the Chinese countryside, into and out of the hands of brutal soldiers and eventually to America. Ms. See will provide historical background and move us along through her newest story.
There will be historic slides of Long Beach provided by Stan Poe to start the program. Brunch will be served. Ms. See will lecture and allow questions and answers prior to signing copies of her new book. Shanghai Girls will be available for purchase at $25.00. Tickets for this event at the beautiful Art Theatre will be $30 for Long Beach Heritage members and $35 for non-members.
